The Use Of Mobile Assisted Language Learning In English Learning Of Fourth-Semester English Department Students At IAIN Samarinda In Academic Year 2019-2020

The researcher conducted this thesis based on curiosity about the use of advanced technology in English learning. The researcher believes that using technology that has made human affairs easier is better if used in the English learning process. The technology used for education is known as Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL). MALL focused on language learning that used mobile as a learning tool. MALL in English learning is handy for students who require enhancing their English skills. Especially English department students at IAIN, they were required to master the primary English language skill to support the learning. With this situation, the researcher wanted to explore how is MALL enhances student’s English skills.
The researcher used descriptive qualitative for this research. The researcher conducted this research during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic situation made the researcher look for alternative ways to collect research data by conducting online interviews. The research subject is fourth semester English department students who are actively studying in the academic year 2019/2020. After the researcher had successfully collected data in online interview answers, the researcher selected the research data. The researcher conducted purposive sampling by selected outstanding students as research data. The researcher will sort out the fourth-semester English department students with their last grand point average (GPA). The researcher has been retrieved interview answers as research data for students who have a GPA above 3.50.
The results showed that the students had positive answers regarding the use of MALL to learn English. They feel helped in learning English with the presence of MALL. Students also shared how they learn by using mobile and how often they use mobile to hone their English skills. There are also advantages and disadvantages in the practice of MALL as a means of learning English. These advantages and disadvantages are not a barrier to utilize the existence of MALL as a learning support tool. In conclusion, Mobile-Assisted Language Learning is a positive activity that students can use to learn English.
