This research is under the guidance of Mr. Dr. Umar Fauzan, M.Pd as the first advisor, and Mrs. Rostanti Toba, M.Pd as the second advisor.
Learning style is the method of person to get solutions from problem- solving in process of learning. High achiever students have their learning style and they have a unique learning style. The objectives of this research described the type of learning style of high achiever students of the English department at IAIN Samarinda and to find the most dominant learning style of high achiever students of the English department at IAIN Samarinda. This research was supported by documentation.
The method used in this research was the descriptive qualitative method. The instrument used in this research were questionnaire and documentation. The researcher collected the data from a questionnaire named the Perceptual Learning Style Preference Questionnaire designed by Joy Reid. The researcher collected the data during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic situations made the researcher looked for alternative ways to collect research data by made online questionnaire via Google form. Meanwhile, due to the pandemic situation, the researcher could not do observation and the researcher got alternative ways to collect research data by Screenshot WhatsApp. The subject of this research was the high achiever students of the English department at IAIN.
This research found that the type of learning style of the English Department at IAIN Samarinda High Achiever students were visual learning style, auditory learning style, and kinesthetic learning style. The result of documentation showed that high achiever students used English in their daily activity, such as watching movies using English subtitles, listening to English songs, setting the language of smartphone and social media using English, etc. The most dominant of high achiever students’ learning style of English department at IAIN Samarinda was visual learning style (77.3%) or 17 students out of all respondents. The data showed that they learn better by reading what the teacher wrote on the whiteboard and they understood better when they read instructions.
