Language learning strategies are the foundation of every lesson to be a major success in language learning. Students also need to know their learning strategies so that the learning process is affective. Therefore, the researcher got information that the fourth semester English students at IAIN Samarinda used a lot of strategies in the learning process. The objective of this study was to determine the language learning strategies used by the fourth semester student of English Department IAIN Samarinda.
This research uses quantitative descriptive method. The instruments used were questionnaires and documentation. The sample in this study used 70 students of English department of IAIN Samarinda. The research data was collected by asking students to answer questions in a questionnaire consisting of 40 questions. The research data were analyzed using the presentation formula.
Based on the results of the data analysis, the learning strategies used by the fourth semester students of English department of IAIN Samarinda was 61% memory strategies, 66% cognitive strategies, 70% compensation strategies, 81% metacognitive strategies, 69% affective strategies, and 55% social strategies. It can be concluded that the learning strategy most widely used by the fourth semester students of English Department of IAIN Samarinda is metacognitive strategies (81%), but the lowest of learning strategies is social strategies (55%).
