Pronunciation as a part of speaking competence plays important role in mastering English. As one of the aspects that affect students' speaking competence, pronunciation must be a part of teaching speaking in junior high schools. SMPN 8 Samarinda is one of the State Junior High Schools in Samarinda that uses English as its main subject. Unfortunately, most students neglect to attend speaking class because they feel that their pronunciation is bad. This research tries to propose jazz chant to arouse students' motivation to interact during speaking activities, especially pronunciation. Through this research, it is known the effect of jazz chant on students' pronunciation.
The research design was true experimental research. The research subject were two classes of the first grade students of SMPN 8 Samarinda. Each class consist of 34 students. The data is obtained from documentation and tests, and then the data is analyzed by using statistical techniques. The t-test, was used to analyzed the data to measure the influence of jazz chant on students‟ pronunciation.
Based on the result of statistical test and discussion show that the mean score of the pretest on experimental class is 75.68 and the posttest is 84.68. It also showed that tcount is 7.095, but ttable is 1.67. It can be concluded that there is an influence of using jazz chant on students‟ pronunciation at the first grade students of SMPN 8 Samarinda.
