English Teachers’ Difficulties In Teaching Reading In Covid-19 Pandemic Era At SMA Negeri 17 Samarinda

This research was supervised by Mr. Umar Fauzan, M.Pd as the first supervisor and Mrs. Rostanti Toba, M.Pd as the second supervisor.
English teaching has attracted more and more attention especially in reading skill. Reading is the main means to examine students’ ability of using English. The teacher needs an engaging technique to help the students’ difficulty in reading skill and involve students’ attention and interest. The purpose of the research is to find out the teachers difficulties in teaching reading in pandemic covid-19 era at SMA Negeri 17 Samarinda.
The method that has been used during this research was qualitative descriptive method. In addition, the instruments used in this study were interview, observation, and documentation. Data collection by the answer of interview, observation checklist, document analysis and the instruction of teachers in using E- learning. The subjects of this research were English teachers in SMA Negeri 17 Samarinda. The data analysis technique used in this research was following the model of data analysis from Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014), namely (1) data condensation, (2) Data Display, and (3) Conclusion Drawing/Verification.
Based on the results of this research, the researchers found that there are several teachers’ difficulties in teaching reading: (1) teachers’ difficulties related to the content such as lack of reading resources and lack of students’ understanding to those materials; (2) teachers’ difficulties related to media such as internet connecting, low students’ participation, undetected students’ reading comprehension, and students’ camera is off during teaching learning process; (3) teachers’ difficulties related to the source is finding material that was suitable for students' abilities, boredom topic and inadequate sources; (4) teachers’ difficulties related to teaching reading strategy such as distance learning, cases of collecting and plagiarism in assignments, students readiness, and limited mastery of teaching strategies.
