Thesis, English Education Department, Teacher Training and Tarbiyah Faculty, State Islamic University Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris Samarinda. This research was supervised by Dr. Bahrani, M. Pd as the first advisor and Dra. Sitti Hadijah, M. Pd as the second advisor. Motivation is an important aspect in the learning process, especially in learning a foreign language such as English. The objectives of this research aim to know how students' motivation in learning English at SMPN 43 Samarinda. The design of this research was descriptive quantitative method using cross-sectional survey method. The instrument used in this study was a questionnaire adapted from Gardner's Attitude/Motivational Test Battery (AMTB) and the questionnaire was made using closed questions as many as 20 questions based on a 5 Likert scale points. The population and sample in this study were all students of SMPN 43 Samarinda who studied English. The total number of students are 56 students. They are 12 students for VII class, 23 students for VIII class, and 21 students for IX class. The data were analyzed using the formula to calculate the average (mean). The results of the research showed that the students of SMPN 43 Samarinda had a score of 3.54 and based on the Five Point Likert range scale, the interpretation was a moderate level of motivation. It can be concluded that the students of SMPN 43 Samarinda had a moderate level of motivation in learning English. It indicated that they had a sufficient interest in learning the English language but were not as enthusiastic and diligent as those with high motivation.
