A lecturer or a teacher holds a significant role in assisting students in developing their writing. To perform good teaching, the lecturers or teachers should provide proper and effective feedback to assist students to develop their writings. Based on this problem, this research is aimed to know what types of feedback are used by the lecturer students’ essay writing work of fourth-semester students of English Education Department of UINSI Samarinda in the academic year of 2020/2021. During the pandemic of Covid-19, the class was conducted online. The types of feedback used in this research are the written-oral feedback, the direct-indirect feedback, the form-content feedback, and the first-final draft feedback.
To conduct this research, the researcher used a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. From three classes of intermediate writing in the English Education Department, the researcher chose one class in which the lecturer gave feedback intensively. The data collected from the documentation, observation, and interview were analyzed following the model of data analysis from Miles et al. namely (1) data condensation, (2) data display, and (3) conclusion drawing/verification.
The result showed that there were four types of feedback found in this research, namely written-oral feedback, direct-indirect feedback, form-content feedback, and first-final draft feedback. These types of feedback were proven to be found based on the result of documentation and observation in the online class conducted via Whatsapp, Google Classroom, and Zoom Meeting. Students’ responses obtained by interviews also confirmed that the lecturer indeed performs the four types of feedback, which according to the students, have helped them to improve their writing skills. The result of this research can be contributed to current or future learning to improve the quality of learning, and also suggests further directions to explore and investigate.
