Students’ Perception Of English Club Extracurricular At SMP Negeri 8 Samarinda In The Academic Year Of 2022/2023

This research is under the guidance of Mr. Dr. Shafa, S.Pd.I., M.Pd. as the first advisor and Mrs. Nadia Sya’ya M.Pd., M.TESOL. as the second advisor.
Currently, schools in Indonesia provide opportunities for students to pursue their interests and talents through an extracurricular program. One of the extracurricular programs in the school is English Club extracurricular. The English Club extracurricular have been running for a long time and still exist to this day. Therefore, the researcher wanted to find out more about the English Club extracurricular, especially at SMP Negeri 8 Samarinda by finding out from the student's side or how students perceive this extracurricular.
This research was descriptive method with quantitative approach. The subject of this research were 12 students of SMP Negeri 8 Samarinda who were joining English Club extracurricular in the academic year 2022/2023. The samples were determined through purposive sampling while the data were collected by using Likert scale questionnaire. Furthermore, researcher analyzed data with descriptive statistics.
The researcher found that the positive response categories (i.e. strongly agree and agree) got a higher percentage than the rest of the categories (i.e. neutral, disagree, and strongly disagree). They showed their agreement based on the 21 statements through questionnaire in each perception aspect: conative component which related to students’ motivation or purpose for joining English Club extracurricular, affective component which related to students’ feeling in joining English Club extracurricular, and cognitive component which related to students’ knowledge and understanding of English Club extracurricular. The statements of conative component items got 50% strongly agree and 22% agree, while the statements of affective component items got 40% strongly agree, and 30% agree, then the statements of cognitive component items got 32% strongly agree and 27% agree. To sum up, the students’ perception of English Club extracurricular at SMP Negeri 8 Samarinda is positive.
