This research is under the guidance of Mrs. Dina Destari, S.S. M. Pd as the first advisor and Mrs. Widya Noviana Noor, M. Pd as the second advisor.
English is rapidly expanding and is considered a commercial language used in various fields such as technology, medicine, trade, education, and more. Proficiency in English is often seen as a measure of education and intelligence and is a requirement for many job positions, particularly in multinational companies. To enhance English skills, extracurricular activities, such as ECO (English Community Organization) at UINSI Samarinda, play a crucial role. ECO offers programs like Weekly, Monthly, ETL, ETM, and E-fest to facilitate English learning and provide opportunities for students to develop their speaking ability. The research aims to explore ECOmates' perceptions regarding the ECO's Weekly Program and its effectiveness in developing speaking skills.
In this research, researcher use Qualitative Method with study case approach. The subjects of this research were the members of UKM ECO UINSI Samarinda that actively participate in ECO’s Weekly Program in Academic year 2022. That took purposive sampling with criteria that member (ECOmates) should be the active member or minimum 3 meetings joined this program. The data were collected use an interview, and documentation.
The ECOmates appreciate the WeeklyProgram 2022 prepared by ECO as it helps to develop their speaking ability through different methods such as impromptu speeches, question-and-answer sessions, games, and interactive activities which they believe is very effective as it encourages them to express themselves in English. However, the inconsistent review system for the materials and some scheduling problems on the weekend and willingness among some ECOmates have impacted their active participation in the program. Social connection has been identified as an essential factor in encouraging their active participation. It is also important to note the impact of several factors such as practical program approach, increased confidence, social influence, challenges and obstacles faced by participants, individual variations, program structure and planning, and a flexible learning environment in enhancing the speaking ability of the participants. Therefore, it is essential to design a structured and engaging language program to maximize the development of the participants' language skills.
