This research was supervised by Mr. Bahrani, M.Pd as the first supervisor and Miss. Nadia Sya'ya, M.Pd., M.TESOL as the second supervisor.
The background of this research is that students have a lack vocabulary due to difficulties in remembered vocabulary and also not knowing the meaning of English words in conventional learning that learning is less effective. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of using pictures in improving students vocabulary in seventh grade at SMPN 37 Samarinda.
This research used a quantitative with a quasi-experimental method, the population of this research included 118 students from class VII at SMPN 37 Samarinda. In determining the sample, the researcher used a purposive sampling formula by taking 60 students, were designed as the control class ( VII A) and the experimental class (VII D). Data are gathered by observation, test, and documentation. The normality test, homogeneity test, and the t-test are addition formulas used to assess data, used to determine if the average value of the experimental group and the control group differs.
The conclusions obtained from this research are the average values pre-test score for the experimental group was 64.50 and for the control group was 67.83. This means there is a difference of 3.33 in the average pre-test score. The average post-test scores were 64.83 for the control class group and 84.17 for the experimental class group respectively. The average post-test score by 19.34 points. A t-count of 8.699 and a significance value of 0.000 were also obtained for the experimental group's results based on the results of the two hypothesis tests. The significance value is lower than 0,05 than it could be stated that Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected, it indicated that there was a significant difference between the post- test results of the experiment class that was used pictures to learn and the control class which was taught without used pictures. As a result, the use of pictures in improving vocabulary in seventh grade of SMPN 37 Samarinda was effective.
