Pronunciation is the most significant aspect to consider while communicating in a foreign language, as it assists in the understanding of information from the speaker to the listener. The students of the English Education Program are expected to be able to pronounce words, phrases, and sentences correctly, including stress and intonation. However, there are still a lot of mangled words made by some students, which encourages the researcher. The objectives of this study were to identify the students’ pronunciation of English sounds and the types of errors that occur most frequently among the students of the English education program at UINSI Samarinda in the academic year 2021/2022.
This research used descriptive quantitative. The researcher took all of the population as samples. The instrument was the test, which consists of 12 vowels, 8 diphthongs, and 5 consonants. This research was carried out in the sixth semester of the English Education Program at UINSI Samarinda in the academic year 2021/2022. The data were collected by reading the text and analyzed using the formula and the rubric score, while students’ recordings were transcribed.
The result showed that the students’ pronunciation errors were moderate errors. The researcher found 43.7% of errors in pronouncing English sounds. 45.3% of errors in pronouncing vowels, 29.2% of errors in pronouncing diphthongs, and 25.4% of errors in pronouncing consonants. The most frequent errors in each English sound were the /ə/ sound for vowels with the percentage of 15%, the /eɪ/ sound for diphthongs with the percentage of 27%, and the /t/ sound for consonants with the percentage of 34%. The types of errors that were the most common made by the respondents were substitutions of the total percentage of 84%, or 1094 errors found. Followed by omission at 14% and addition at 2%.
