Reading comprehension is an ability to understand a text to get information. Reading is one of the important skills that must be mastered by students to develop language skills and improve student literacy. Good reading comprehension allows students to understand the information contained in the text, analyze and make conclusions that are in place. During education at SMK Miftahul Ulum Samarinda, it is common for the researcher find students who have difficulties in reading comprehension such as lack of vocabulary and spelling. Regarding that, the teacher has challenges in teaching reading comprehension such as the teacher must have strategies that are effective and interesting for the students. This makes the researcher wanted to know the strategies used by the English teacher at the eleventh Grade of students SMK Miftahul Ulum Samarinda.
This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with interview, observation and documentation as the research instrument. The subject of research was the English teacher in teaching reading comprehension at the eleventh grade of students’ SMK Miftahul Ulum Samarinda in the Academic Year 2022/2023.
The finding of this research was the teacher used 6 strategies in teaching reading comprehension, namely Scaffolding, Think Aloud, Reciprocal Teaching, Question Answer Relations (QARs), Shared Reading (SR) and Independent Reading (IR). Based on the observation and interview, the strategies were effective in teaching reading comprehension because those strategies are chosen according to students’ ability. The strategies also help student understand the text and improve students' reading skill. The results of this study also be used as guidelines by the teacher in designing learning strategies that are more creative and effective in increasing students' reading omprehension skills.
